Who I am – Matteo Niccoli(He/Him)
I am a geoscientist with a first class honours degree in Geology from the University of Rome, Italy, and a Masters degree in Geophysics from the University of Calgary, Alberta.
I have 22 years of professional experience: 19 years in the upstream oil and gas sector (onshore and offshore projects in Western Canada and Norway), and 3 years with the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Regulator, where am involved in marine geophysical, geotechnicalm and regulatory work.
I am passionate about integration across geoscience disciplines, and about solving problems with Python. My interests include scientific visualization and colormap design (a 15-year research passion), geospatial machine learning, image analysis and morphology, cone penetration test interpretation, seabottom habitat and morphology mapping, and seismic interpretation. I enjoy tinkering with complex problems, Fermi estimation, and sharing what I learn.
What I blog about
I write about geophysics, geotechnical data analysis, scientific visualization, machine learning / AI, and Python. Posts are largely original material in the form of tutorials, case studies, and experiments, often sharing data, results, and code. I also participate in geoscience ML competitions (GeoHab MLWG, FORCE, TGS) and occasionally write about what those teach me.
